Winter Wellness: Top Tips to Thrive This Season

The chilly months are descending upon us, and with them comes the potential for sniffling noses, brittle hair, and the dreaded seasonal slump. But fear not! Together Health dietician Lola Biggs has gathered some fabulous tips to help you not just survive, but actually thrive this winter.

Embrace the Sunshine: Get Your Vitamin D

As the days grow shorter, it’s essential to soak up as much daylight as possible. Whenever the sun peeks through the clouds, get outside and let those rays work their magic! However, once October rolls around, we start to rely on our vitamin D reserves from the summer.

This marvellous vitamin plays a vital role in keeping us sprightly. To keep my levels topped up, I indulge in foods rich in vitamin D, such as sustainable mackerel and high-quality eggs. I also take a Vitamin D3 supplement derived from lichen—because who doesn’t want a little plant power in their life? Always look for around 1000iu (that’s international units for those not in-the-know) per day, and skip any supplements with unnecessary additives.

Nourish Your Locks and Skin

Winter isn’t just about hot cocoa; it’s also the season of hats and scarves. But beware—the cozy accessories can wreak havoc on your hair! I’ve found that a simple braid can keep those tangles at bay. Pair it with a weekly hair oil treatment to pamper your scalp and stimulate blood circulation while nourishing those precious locks.

Don’t forget about your skin, either! Cold winds and central heating can leave your cheeks looking more battered than a rugby ball. Instead of petroleum-based lip balms, opt for natural multi-use ointments with ingredients like calendula. A little pot of this miracle balm can save your lips, hands, and even that poor, dry nose from winter’s wrath. One of my favourites is the Weleda Calendula Weather Protection Cream; it’s like wrapping your skin in a warm hug!

Boost Your Defences!

Here comes winter, marching in with its army of sniffles and coughs. Plant your defences ahead of time! I like to spend a little time each week crafting wholesome homemade broths, soups, and stews. Not only do they taste divine, but they’re also perfect for giving your immune system a boost. Plus, why not support your local farmers’ market? You can score seasonal goodies while avoiding all that dreadful unnecessary packaging!

No one wants to spend winter wrapped in tissues, so if illness finds you, prioritise rest and recovery. Stock up on vitamin C and zinc supplements to breeze through those sniffles quickly. And let’s not forget the importance of staying hydrated. Hot teas bursting with antioxidants—think matcha for a whirl of energy—are not just delightful but a winter essential. Once work is done, swap to comforting caffeine-free herbal teas. I’m partial to ginger, elderberry, or echinacea for that soothing hug-in-a-cup feel.

Keep Moving: Stay Active this Winter!

When it’s drizzly and dreary outside, motivation can sometimes take a holiday of its own. Don’t let those winter blues get you down! Find ways to stay active indoors—yoga is my personal favourite. Search for a local studio that matches your vibe, and if it has a sauna, consider that a bonus! A 20-minute sauna session can work wonders for your immune system.

Starting new habits in the winter months might seem daunting, but prioritising mental and physical health can boost your mood. By listening to your body and choosing activities that keep you mobile, you can enjoy the chilly season and feel invigorated until those glorious spring days roll around.

Final Thoughts

So, as winter settles in and the festive spirit starts to bloom, remember: it’s not just about surviving the season; it’s about embracing it. By nourishing your body, keeping active, and utilising these snazzy tips, you’ll be ready to tackle whatever winter throws your way. Get out there, enjoy the frosty air, and let your winter shine!
