I recently had a Deep Tissue Thai massage with Maliwan, and it was truly exceptional. This is my third visit so thought I should write a review. From the moment the session began, she created a calming, welcoming atmosphere that made it easy to relax. Her technique is outstanding- precise and incredibly intuitive. She knew exactly where to apply pressure and how to release tension without ever causing discomfort. What stood out most was her professionalism combined with genuine warmth. Every stretch and movement felt purposeful, and I walked out feeling lighter, more flexible, and completely refreshed. It was easily one of the best massages I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for an authentic, deeply restorative Thai massage, I highly recommend booking with Maliwan. She is truly gifted at what she does.

I had a Thai massage here recently and the experience was a mix of positives and challenges. The massage room was spacious, ambient, and very comfortable, especially the massage table. The masseuse was friendly, attentive, and clearly skilled. The massage itself was mostly relaxing, but at times the pressure was stronger than I could comfortably handle. I was reassured it was “good pain” due to the tightness in my shoulders and back, but I did end up with bruises on my arms and back and felt very sore for a couple of days, which affected my sleep. On the positive side, a few days later I noticed that I felt lighter and less tense, which shows the massage did release a lot of tightness. I would recommend this place for those who like deep, strong pressure massages, but if you prefer something gentler, I suggest making this clear to the masseuse at the start.

A beautiful experience — highly recommended I had the pleasure of booking a Thai massage in Glasgow today and it was a truly beautiful experience. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and at ease. The team was very friendly, incredibly professional, and delivered excellent work throughout my visit. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing, and I could tell that great care was taken in every detail. It’s clear that the ladies working here are passionate about what they do, and I’m so grateful for the hard work they put in. This is definitely a place I’d love to return to — and I’m already looking forward to my next visit. Thank you again!

Fantastic place. Staff are very knowledgeable, attentive and skilled. I had some tightness in my back and hip which they noticed right away and went a long way to easing. The staff were also careful around my knee and elbow which had some sporting injuries. The rooms are serene with light music and subdued lighting. The hot oil treatment is very soothing. I look forward to returning. Many thanks

Frequently Asked Questions

Thai massage, also known as Thai yoga massage, is a traditional healing practice that originated in Thailand over 2,500 years ago. Unlike other types of massage, Thai massage involves the practitioner using their hands, elbows, knees, and feet to apply pressure to specific points on the body, while also incorporating gentle stretching and yoga-like movements without the use of oils. This unique combination of techniques helps to release tension, improve flexibility, and promote overall well-being.

Thai Oil Massage incorporates many of the same techniques as traditional Thai massage, including gentle stretching, acupressure, and rhythmic compression. However, the addition of oils allows for deeper penetration into the muscles, resulting in a more nourishing and hydrating experience for the skin. The combination of massage techniques and aromatic oils promotes relaxation, relieves muscle tension, and enhances overall well-being.

Thai massage offers a wide range of benefits for both the body and mind. Some of the key benefits include: Relief from muscle tension and stiffness, Improved circulation and lymphatic drainage, Reduced stress and anxiety, Enhanced flexibility and range of motion, Boosted immune function, Improved sleep quality, Increased energy levels and vitality. Thai massage provides a host of significant benefits for both body and mind. Primarily, it excels at reducing stress and promoting deep relaxation through rhythmic movements and pressure. The distinctive assisted yoga-like stretches are highly effective in increasing flexibility, expanding range of motion, and relieving joint stiffness. Furthermore, Thai massage targets muscle tension, effectively easing soreness and aches by applying focused acupressure and compression techniques. This process also stimulates circulation, enhancing blood flow and potentially boosting the lymphatic system. Many recipients report feeling energised and revitalised afterwards, attributing this to the balancing of the body's energy pathways ('Sen' lines), contributing to overall physical and mental well-being. Traditional Thai Massage is performed with clothes on, so it's best to wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows for movement. All oil massages require you to undress down to underwear. Our therapist will leave the room while you get undressed and you will have towels and blankets to preserve your privacy. Our therapists are all trained to ensure that your privacy is maintained at all times.

Glasgow offers a vibrant selection of venues for experiencing traditional Thai massage, an ancient healing practice renowned for its unique blend of acupressure, assisted yoga stretches, and rhythmic compression. Unlike typical Western massage, it's usually performed on a floor mat with the client fully clothed in loose attire. Thai Massage Therapists use their hands, elbows, knees, and feet to work along the body's energy lines ("Sen"). Establishments such as Glasgow Thai Massage, offer services from dedicated Thai massage to multi-disciplinary wellness services. Popular for its ability to relieve muscle tension, improve flexibility and circulation, reduce stress, and promote deep relaxation and overall well-being. Various styles, including Traditional Thai, Aromatherapy and Thai oil massage, are available.

The history of Thai Massage, known traditionally in Thailand as 'Nuad Boran' (meaning ancient massage), is believed to stretch back over 2,500 years. Its origins are intrinsically linked with the spread of Buddhism and are commonly attributed to an Indian physician named Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha (also known as Shivago Komarpaj). He was a contemporary of the Buddha and physician to the Magadha King Bimbisara, suggesting deep roots in ancient Indian healing systems like Ayurveda and Yoga. As Buddhist monks travelled from India to Siam (modern-day Thailand), they brought these healing practices with them. Over centuries, these Indian concepts of energy lines (Prana Nadis in Ayurveda, adapted to 'Sen' lines in Thai massage) and assisted stretching (similar to yoga asanas) blended with principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine, particularly acupressure techniques, which likely arrived via trade routes. Furthermore, these external influences integrated with indigenous Thai healing methods and local knowledge of the body. For much of its history, Thai massage knowledge was passed down orally from teacher to student, often within the setting of Buddhist temples ('Wats'), which served as community health centres. A pivotal moment for its preservation occurred in the early 19th century under King Rama III. Concerned that knowledge was being lost, partly due to the destruction of texts during the Burmese sacking of the former capital Ayutthaya in 1767, he commissioned scholars to gather existing knowledge and inscribe it onto stone plaques ('epigraphs') at the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok. These inscriptions, depicting energy lines and therapeutic points, remain there today, cementing Wat Pho's status as a primary centre for traditional Thai medicine and massage education. This rich, blended history has resulted in the unique, holistic therapy practiced worldwide today.

In Glasgow, the presence and practice of authentic Thai massage are intrinsically linked to the city's Thai community. While perhaps smaller than some other diasporas, the Thai community has played a vital role in establishing this traditional therapy within Scotland's largest city. Individuals bringing their skills and cultural heritage from Thailand have opened dedicated massage studios, spas, and wellness centres. They offer Glaswegians access to genuine Thai massage, often learned through traditional training pathways. These practitioners not only provide a valued service sought for relaxation and therapeutic benefits but also act as cultural ambassadors, sharing a significant aspect of Thai heritage. Their expertise ensures the availability of authentic Nuad Boran, enriching Glasgow's diverse wellness offerings and maintaining the integrity of this ancient practice far from its origins.

Thai Massage is increasingly recognised as an effective therapy for sports injuries and recovery. Rooted in ancient Thai medicine, this practice combines acupressure, assisted stretching, and rhythmic compression to promote healing and restore mobility. Unlike other forms of massage, Thai Massage focuses on energy lines (sen) and incorporates dynamic movements that help lengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and release tension deep within the body. For athletes and active individuals, Thai Massage offers several key benefits. It increases blood flow and lymphatic circulation, which helps reduce inflammation and speeds up the healing process of soft tissue injuries. The stretching techniques mimic yoga-like movements, which aid in breaking down scar tissue and improving range of motion — crucial for rehabilitation after sprains, strains, or repetitive stress injuries. Additionally, Thai Massage supports the nervous system by calming the mind and reducing stress levels, which can be vital for both physical and mental recovery. It's also preventative, helping maintain muscular balance and preventing future injuries caused by tightness or imbalance. Whether used post-training or as part of a recovery plan, Thai Massage offers a holistic approach to sports therapy. It doesn't just treat symptoms but addresses the root of muscular dysfunction, enhancing overall athletic performance and resilience.

Training to become a Thai Massage therapist is a comprehensive and deeply immersive experience. Students typically begin their journey at one of the country's respected massage schools, such as Wat Pho Traditional Medical School in Bangkok or the Old Medicine Hospital in Chiang Mai. Courses often start with a 30- to 150-hour foundation program, covering core techniques, body mechanics, and an introduction to the body's energy lines, or sen. The training is hands-on and rigorous. Students learn to use their hands, elbows, knees, and feet to apply pressure, as well as how to guide clients through assisted stretches. Anatomy, physiology, and the theory behind traditional Thai medicine are also woven into the curriculum. Respect for Thai culture, mindfulness, and the meditative aspect of massage are emphasised throughout the training. Advanced courses may follow, focusing on therapeutic massage for specific conditions, including sports injuries, pregnancy, and chronic pain. Students are assessed through both written exams and practical demonstrations of technique and client care. In Thailand, becoming a skilled Thai Massage therapist isn't just about technique — it's also about embodying the healing philosophy behind the practice. Graduates often leave with a profound respect for the art and a deep understanding of the body's natural healing systems.
