Thai Hot Stone Massage uses smooth volcanic basalt stones, heated to a precise therapeutic temperature, alongside Maliwan’s hands to deliver warmth deep into muscle tissue. The heat allows muscles to release more completely than manual pressure alone — making this treatment particularly effective for chronic tension, cold-related stiffness, and anyone who finds deep pressure uncomfortable but needs genuine depth of work. The stones are used both as placement tools on key energy points and as active massage tools, combining the ancient traditions of Thai bodywork with the grounding power of stone therapy.

What to Expect

You undress to your comfort level and lie on the treatment table, fully draped with towels. Heated basalt stones are placed on key energy points (along the spine, in the palms, between the toes) while Maliwan works with additional stones as massage tools on the back, shoulders, legs, and arms. The treatment alternates between stone work and hands-on massage. The stones are never uncomfortably hot — if the temperature is too intense at any point, Maliwan adjusts immediately. Sessions run 60 or 90 minutes.

When Heat Can Work Against You

Heat is not always helpful. It brings more blood to an area, which suits a cold, stiff muscle, but in tissue that is already inflamed it can add to the swelling. This is why the NHS advises avoiding heat on a fresh sprain or strain for the first couple of days.

A body that is already on high alert can also treat strong heat as one more thing to guard against. The muscle braces instead of softening, and the therapist gets less depth, not more. Reduced heat sensation, as with peripheral neuropathy, brings a different risk: you may not feel the heat accurately at all.

If a joint is hot, swollen or sore to touch, Maliwan may leave the stones out and use Thai oil massage or cooler work instead. Tell us about any condition at booking and we will recommend the right treatment.

Who Is Hot Stone Massage For?

Hot stone massage suits people who want deep relief for a named area, such as the back, shoulders or neck, and who enjoy warmth. It is a good fit when muscle feels hard and guarded. If you want firm, targeted pressure on a stubborn knot, deep tissue Thai work or traditional Thai massage may serve you better.

Thai hot stone massage costs £75 for 60 minutes or £115 for 90 minutes. You can book online and we will advise honestly on whether stones suit you.
